50 millions years ago Berici Hills were completely underwater; it was then that Berica Stone formed: limestone of both clastica and biogenal origin, as it developped by the sedimentation of materials brought along by the watercourses that flowed into the sea, and by the sedimentation of the skeletons and shells of dead sea-animals.
